Chapter 2: She Looks Just Like You

Inside the box was a photograph.
A woman I had never seen before — young, smiling, holding a newborn baby.
On the back, in handwriting I didn't recognize, were four words:
*"She looks just like you."*
My hands were shaking.
I unlocked the bathroom door.
Caleb was still standing in the hall.
The moment he saw my face, he closed his eyes.
"Who is she?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Caleb.
Who is she?"
"It was before we got serious," he said quietly.
"I didn't know she was pregnant.
I swear I didn't know."
"She sent you a photo of a baby and you didn't know?"
"I never received it.
I never saw that package until tonight."
I looked down at the photograph again.
The baby had Caleb's eyes.
I had looked into those eyes every single day for fifteen years and I knew exactly what I was seeing.
"How old would she be now?" I whispered.
Caleb said nothing.
That silence told me everything.
Then my phone buzzed on the bathroom shelf.
I glanced at the screen.
It was a message from a number I didn't recognize.
*"I think it's time we finally met.
I've been looking for my father for a long time."*
