Chapter 1: The Man I Thought I Knew

My husband always covered his tattoos in public — until a complete stranger recognized one in a store and said something that made me burst into tears right there.
Brad and I had a happy marriage and three wonderful children.
He was a gentle father and never left the house without kissing me goodbye.
But there was one thing I never understood.
Brad's body was covered in beautiful tattoos.
At home, the children loved tracing them with their fingers.
Yet in public, he covered every inch of ink.
Even in summer, he wore long sleeves, pants, and thin gloves.
"Why hide something so beautiful?" I once asked.
His smile disappeared.
"I got them when I was young, and I regret it."
I respected his choice.
But there was always something strange in his expression that I couldn't quite place.
One chilly afternoon, we took the children to the park.
Our youngest, Molly, slipped near a muddy puddle and soaked her dress.
Brad immediately pulled off his button-down shirt and wrapped it around her.
For the first time in years, he stood outside in a short-sleeved T-shirt, his tattooed arms completely exposed.
On our way home, we stopped at a store to buy Molly something dry.
Brad was reaching for a sweater when a carton hit the floor behind us.
A young woman stood frozen in the aisle, staring at his tattoos.
Her face went white.
"Bradley?" she whispered.
My husband slowly lowered his arm.
"I'm sorry.
You've mistaken me for someone else."
"No, I haven't." Her voice cracked as she stepped closer.
"That tattoo…
I never thought I'd see you again."
"Please," Brad murmured.
"Not in front of my family."
She finally noticed me and the children standing behind him.
"Your family?" Her eyes filled with tears.
"So you never told them?
You really don't know what your husband did?"
"What do you mean?" I asked, barely recognizing my own voice.
She leaned toward me and said the one thing I never expected.
A second later, my knees struck the cold tile, and I began to sob in the middle of the store.
