Chapter 2: They're Looking for Elizabeth

I shoved the test behind the cabinet and splashed cold water on my face.

"I'm fine," I called back.

"Just tired."

The door opened anyway.

Liam stood in the doorway, still holding his coffee mug, and his eyes went straight to my hands.

I hadn't stopped shaking.

"Emma." His voice dropped.

"What happened?"

"Nothing.

I told you, I'm fine."

He stepped inside and crouched down in front of me.

Liam had known me since we were nine years old.

He always knew when I was lying.

"Is it Alessandro Vitali?" he said quietly.

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

"I saw the gala photos online.

You were in the background of one of them." He set his mug on the sink.

"I didn't say anything because I thought you'd tell me yourself."

I couldn't speak.

"Emma." His jaw tightened.

"Tell me you didn't get close to that man."

"Liam—"

"He's not who you think he is." He pulled out his phone and turned the screen toward me.

It was a news article.

The headline read: *Vitali Family Under Federal Investigation.*

"They've been looking for someone," Liam said.

"A witness.

Someone who was at the Obsidian Hotel six weeks ago."

The room tilted.

"They're looking for Elizabeth," he whispered.
