Chapter 2: The Man Who Found Her

The Captain walked back within seconds.

That alone told me this was serious.

He looked at the boarding pass.

Then at Grandma.

Then at the first pilot.

"Ma'am," he said quietly, "where did you get this?"

Grandma's voice was steady.

"My husband gave it to me.

The night before he passed."

The two pilots exchanged a look I couldn't read.

"Your husband," the Captain said slowly.

"What was his name?"

"Robert Walsh."

The cabin went still.

The first pilot pressed his hand flat against the seat back like he needed something to hold onto.

"Robert Walsh was my father's instructor," he said.

"He saved his life on a flight out of Chicago.

1987."

I couldn't breathe.

"That boarding pass," the Captain said, turning it over carefully, "this route.

This seat.

34A." He paused.

"This was the flight."

Grandma nodded like she already knew.

"He told me that if I ever made it back onto a plane," she said softly, "I should sit in that seat.

He said someone would find me."

Her hands had stopped trembling.

But mine hadn't.

Then the first pilot reached into his shirt pocket and pulled something out.

A photograph.

He held it toward Grandma without a word.

She looked down — and her breath caught.

What was in that photograph — and what had Grandpa never told her?
