Chapter 1: She Gave It With Her Own Hands

My grandma donated her gold jewelry to our church before she d*ed — a week later, I saw it on the pastor's wife, and what I did next wiped the smiles off both their faces.

My grandmother, Ruth, had attended the same little church for forty-three years.

Even near the end, when arthritis twisted her fingers and walking left her breathless, she refused to miss Sunday service.

Three weeks before she d*ed, Grandma showed me a velvet box.

Inside was the gold necklace, bracelet, and earrings Grandpa had given her for their twenty-fifth anniversary.

"I want Pastor Michael to auction these," she said.

"They're raising money for families who can't afford groceries."

I offered to take them for her.

"No.

I want to give them myself."

That Sunday, I held her arm as she slowly climbed the church steps, her cane in one hand and the velvet box in the other.

After the service, she handed it directly to Pastor Michael.

"For the charity auction."

He opened the box and looked inside.

"Ruth, this is incredibly generous."

Grandma smiled.

"Then make sure it helps somebody."

He hugged her and promised it would.

I took a picture because Grandma looked so proud.

She passed twelve days later.

The Sunday after her funeral, Pastor Michael's wife, Susan, walked past me.

I froze.

Grandma's necklace was around her neck.

The matching bracelet circled her wrist, and the earrings hung beneath her hair.

I knew that set instantly.

The necklace still had the tiny dent beside the clasp from when Grandpa caught it in a car door years ago.

After the service, I stepped toward her.

"Beautiful jewelry."

Susan smiled.

"Thank you."

"Where did you get it?"

She touched the necklace.

"My mother.

I inherited the whole set after she d*ed."

She lied straight to my face without even blinking.

Then she smiled again.

"Sentimental pieces are priceless, aren't they?"

I swallowed my anger.

"Absolutely."

She had no idea I was about to teach her and her husband a lesson they wouldn't forget.

So, the following Sunday, I walked into church carrying another gift box.

Pastor Michael noticed it immediately.

"Is that something else Ruth left for the church?"

His eyes lit up.

I held it out.

"Grandma wanted the church to have one more thing."

"How generous."

He took the box far too eagerly and opened it.

His smile lasted one second.

Then he pushed aside the tissue paper and pulled out what I'd hidden underneath.

His face went white.

His hands started trembling.

"What have you done?" he whispered.
