Chapter 1: What He Left Behind

My grandkids went back home after staying with me all summer — but while changing the sheets on their bed, I found something tucked under the mattress that made me forget how to breathe.
My son, Adam, and his wife, Tara, live about four hours away.
This year, they asked if their two kids, nine-year-old Ben and seven-year-old Sophie, could stay with me for the entire summer.
They claimed they were doing major house renovations and it wasn't safe for the kids to be around the construction dust.
I was thrilled.
The kids are incredibly sweet and well-behaved.
We spent the last two months going to the park, baking, and watching movies on the couch.
The only unusual thing I noticed was that Ben was overly protective of his small green backpack.
He brought it with him to every single room in the house, even keeping it by his feet under the dining table.
This morning, Adam and Tara drove down to pick them up.
We had a quick breakfast, hugged goodbye, and they hit the road.
Right before Ben got into the car, I noticed him glancing nervously up at the guest room window, but I didn't think much of it at the time.
After the house was completely quiet, I went upstairs to the guest room to strip the beds.
I pulled the heavy quilt and the pillows off the twin bed where Ben had been sleeping.
As I lifted the corner of the mattress to remove the fitted sheet, I spotted something shoved deep in the narrow gap between the mattress and the wooden bed frame.
I assumed Ben had just tucked a toy from his green backpack down there to keep it away from his little sister and simply forgot about it.
I reached into the dark gap, pulled the cold, heavy object out, and turned it over in my hands.
I just sat down slowly on the bare mattress, staring at the item, completely unable to speak.

What did Ben hide under that mattress — and why was he so afraid to leave without it?
