Chapter 2: Something Older Than Surprise

⬇️ PART 2 ⬇️
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then Anna's face crumpled, and she whispered, "Bella.
It's really you."
I grabbed her hands.
They were ice cold and still shaking.
The cut on her finger was still bl00ding but she didn't seem to notice.
Neither did I.
"I looked for you," I said.
"For years.
I never stopped."
"I looked too." Her voice broke.
"They told me you didn't want contact.
That your new family had asked for a clean break."
Someone had lied to both of us.
For fifteen years.
Before I could speak, Victoria's voice cut across the room like a blade.
"Isabella.
What on earth are you doing on the floor?"
I stood up slowly.
Anna stood beside me.
I did not let go of her hand.
"This woman," I said, loud enough for the nearest tables to hear, "is my sister."
Victoria's smile didn't disappear all at once.
It faded, piece by piece, as she looked from me to Anna and back again.
Something shifted behind her eyes — not surprise.
Something older than surprise.
Something that looked like she already knew.
Alexander had gone very still near the altar.
He wasn't looking at Anna.
He was looking at his mother.
And he wasn't asking questions.
