Chapter 1: The Dress She Ruined

My future MIL sewed tiny suitcases all over my wedding train because I already had a 7-year-old daughter—when my fiancé saw it, what he did made the entire room go silent.
When I met Brandon, I had already been raising my seven-year-old daughter, Lisa, alone for four years.
Her father disappeared before her third birthday, but Brandon never treated her like somebody else's child.
He taught her to ride a bike, packed snacks for her soccer games, and sat through every school concert.
When he proposed, Lisa threw her arms around him.
"Does this mean I get a dad too?"
Brandon hugged her.
"If you'll have me."
His mother, Barbara, was far less enthusiastic.
In public she was polite, but privately she'd make comments about Brandon "taking on another man's responsibilities" and ask whether I expected him to pay for Lisa's college someday.
I tried to ignore her.
On our wedding morning, I left my gown hanging in the bridal suite while my hair and makeup were being done.
Barbara disappeared for about twenty minutes, but with photographers, bridesmaids, and relatives constantly coming and going, I barely noticed.
Later, everyone was rushing.
My long train was gathered over Barbara's arms so it wouldn't drag across the floor, and just before I stepped into the ceremony, she insisted on arranging it herself.
I walked down the aisle believing everything was perfect.
Then the whispers started.
By the time I reached Brandon, people in the front rows were openly staring behind me.
Lisa, standing nearby in her flower-girl dress, suddenly frowned.
"Mom...
why does that suitcase have my name on it?"
My stomach dropped.
I turned.
Sewn all over my white train were eight tiny plush suitcases, complete with little handles and luggage tags.
The largest hung at the very end.
Its tag read:
Lisa.
I stared at Barbara.
"What did you do?"
She gave me a small smile.
"I simply made the dress honest.
My son isn't getting only a wife, is he?
Now everyone can see the baggage he'll be carrying."
Lisa's face crumpled.
The entire room went painfully quiet.
Brandon looked at the suitcases, then at his mother.
I had never seen that expression on his face before.
He turned to the pastor.
"Please give me five minutes."
Then he walked straight out of the ceremony.
Barbara actually smiled, as though she'd finally made him see reason.
Five minutes later, the doors opened again.
Brandon walked back in carrying something in both hands.
The moment I saw it, I covered my mouth.
And Barbara went completely white.

What did Brandon walk back in carrying — and why did it make Barbara go white?
