Chapter 2: The Question She Couldn't Answer

The room went completely still.
Nathan's voice was quiet.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
"Mom.
Name one thing you've built with your own hands."
Laura blinked.
"I beg your pardon?"
"One thing.
Sewn, grown, fixed, made.
Anything."
Laura let out a short laugh.
"Nathan, I'm a professor.
That's not exactly—"
"She raised three children alone after losing both parents at eighteen," Nathan said.
"She kept a family together on a diner salary.
She taught herself everything she needed to know.
Without a single class."
He glanced toward my mother.
"And this morning, she woke up first, made breakfast for everyone, and washed every dish.
While you sat on that sofa."
Laura's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Then Ronald appeared in the doorway.
He had been standing there longer than any of us realized.
His face was unreadable.
"Laura," he said quietly.
"Enough."
Something in his voice made her go still.
I looked at my mother.
Her eyes were wet, but she was standing straight.
Then Laura said something none of us expected.
And the expression on Ronald's face told me this wasn't the first time she'd done something like this.
There was a history here.
Something Nathan hadn't told me.
Something that changed everything I thought I understood about his family.
