Chapter 2: The Smile That Didn't Move

The ballroom went completely still.

I lifted the wig.

One slow, deliberate movement.

Every camera in the room turned toward my bare scalp.

I heard gasps.

A woman near the back covered her mouth.

Someone's champagne glass clinked against a table as their hand went slack.

Sabrina did not move.

She sat frozen at the head table, her smile still arranged on her face but her eyes completely empty.

"This morning," I said into the microphone, "someone entered my room while I slept."

Michael was staring at me.

His face had gone the color of ash.

"They stood over me.

They took a razor to my head.

And then they left a note on my mirror."

I unfolded the paper on the podium.

"It said — *Congratulations.

You finally have a hairstyle that suits your age.*"

The silence that followed was the loudest thing I had ever heard.

Then a voice cut through it.

Sabrina's voice.

Calm.

Almost bored.

"She's confused," she said, loud enough for the nearest tables to hear.

"She's been struggling for a while.

Michael, you know how she gets."

Michael said nothing.

He looked at his new wife.

Then he looked at me.

And in that moment, I saw something in his face I had not expected.

Not anger at Sabrina.

Not shame.

Something that looked almost like relief — that someone else had finally said it first.

My son had known.
