Chapter 1: She Called Her a Monster
MY FOUR-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER EXPOSED MY WIFE…
THEN WE FOUND A CAMERA THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING.
"She's not my new mommy."
Lily stood on her chair, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
"She's a monster."
My wife Meredith laughed nervously.
Everyone at the table thought Lily was being difficult.
I almost did too.
Until my daughter started crying.
"She locks my room."
"She takes Bunny."
"She hides Mommy's picture."
Then Lily looked directly at Meredith.
"She says Mommy d*ed because I came."
The room went completely silent.
Meredith immediately denied it.
Too quickly.
That was when I knew something was wrong.
We checked the security footage from the house.
And there it was.
Meredith taking Lily into the laundry room.
Locking the door.
Leaving her alone.
For nearly an hour.
Then came the sentence I'll never forget:
"Maybe tomorrow you'll remember who Mommy is now."
I told Meredith to leave.
But before she could, Lily pointed toward her bookshelf.
"Daddy…
there's another camera."
A tiny black lens was hidden between her stuffed animals.
It wasn't one of mine.
Police searched the house.
They found MORE.
One in the hallway.
One in the laundry room.
And one inside my office.
Someone had been watching us.
But Detective Cole discovered something even worse.
The bedroom camera wasn't three weeks old.
It had been there for ELEVEN MONTHS.
That meant someone had been recording my daughter…
BEFORE MEREDITH EVER MOVED INTO OUR HOUSE.
Then police checked the memory card.
The footage wasn't only from our home.
It showed another house.
Another family.
And another little girl.
I stared at Detective Cole.
"Who is she?"
She didn't answer right away.
Then she said something that made my entire body go cold:
"We're still trying to identify her."
I glanced across the room at Lily.
For the first time, I wondered if my marriage had never been a coincidence.
Maybe Meredith hadn't found a widowed father by chance.
Maybe she had been searching for us.
Watching us.
Waiting.
And if that was true…
WHAT DID SHE WANT WITH MY DAUGHTER?
