Chapter 2: The Blue Envelope

The police rushed in as paramedics lifted Irene onto a stretcher.

Margaret pointed at her.

“Search that woman!

She has been lying to my son for months.”

Irene’s eyes opened weakly.

She gripped my sleeve.

“Austin…

the blue envelope,” she whispered.

“Don’t let Carla take it.”

Carla suddenly lunged toward the suitcase, but an officer stopped her.

“What envelope?” I demanded.

Carla said nothing.

Margaret’s tears vanished.

I searched beneath the cash and found a sealed blue envelope containing bank statements, a forged power of attorney, and pages bearing what looked like my signature.

“I never signed these.”

“You must have forgotten,” Margaret said quickly.

Then Carla’s phone lit up on the floor.

A message appeared: **Bring the original trust papers by 9 a.m., or the transfer cannot happen.**

The officer read it aloud.

Margaret went pale.

I turned to Irene.

“How long have you known?”

Her hand began trembling.

“Since your mother started putting something in my tea,” she whispered.

“But that isn’t the worst thing they did.”

Then she looked directly at Carla.

“Ask her what happened in the nursery last Tuesday.”

Carla stopped breathing.
