Chapter 2: Nobody Tells Me Either

I stood in the hallway at ten thirty-eight and did the one thing he never expected.

I left my own door wide open.

Not partway.

All the way.

Light on, me sitting on my bed facing the hall, book in hand, completely visible to anyone walking past.

He came up the stairs at ten forty-one.

Stopped when he saw me.

"What are you doing?"

"Reading," I said.

"This is my room.

Nobody tells me what to do in my own space."

His face went still.

He stood there for a moment, then walked to the bathroom.

Paused at the door.

And closed it.

I didn't say a word.

I turned a page.

But that wasn't the end of it.

The next morning, my mother-in-law pulled me into the kitchen before anyone else was up.

"He didn't sleep," she said quietly.

"He's angrier than I've seen him in years."

I waited.

She looked at the door, then back at me.

"There's something you don't know about why he's really like this." She pressed her lips together.

"Something that happened before you and my son ever met."

She started to speak — and then Dan's footsteps hit the top stair.

She stopped.

Looked at her hands.

"Not now," she whispered.
