Chapter 1: The Gardener Who Came Home

My fiancée thought I was in London.
She had no idea the gardener kneeling beside her roses was listening to every word.
Under white silk awnings, Connecticut's wealthiest guests raised their champagne glasses to the woman I was supposed to marry.
Vanessa looked flawless in pale yellow.
My seven-year-old daughter looked like she was trying to disappear.
I had come home secretly after Sophie whispered something during a video call that I couldn't forget.
"Daddy…
the rules are different when you're gone."
Now, with dirt beneath my fingernails and a false beard hiding my face, I watched her arrange my children for the cameras.
"Sophie, smile."
My little girl obeyed.
"More."
Then a camera flashed.
Caleb startled.
His orange juice slipped from his hands and shattered across the marble, splashing Vanessa's expensive shoes.
Every member of the staff went still.
One lowered her eyes.
Another quietly reached for a towel.
They knew what came next.
My three-year-old son hugged the battered rabbit his mother had mended before she d*ed.
His mouth trembled around an apology he could barely pronounce.
Sophie stepped in front of him.
"It was an accident."
Vanessa kept smiling for the guests as her fingers tightened around my daughter's wrist.
I started to rise.
But the housekeeper reached them first.
Grace Miller stepped between Vanessa and Sophie — and the sl*p meant for my daughter struck her across the face.
The sound stopped every conversation on the terrace.
Grace staggered, caught herself, and stayed exactly where she was.
"You will never touch these children again."
Vanessa leaned toward her, furious beneath that perfect smile.
"You have no idea where you are."
Grace glanced down at the two children clinging to her uniform.
"I know exactly whose house this is.
That's why I've been sleeping outside their bedroom for the last six nights."
Six nights.
I had guards at every entrance.
Cameras along every corridor.
Men paid to keep danger outside my gates.
What had this woman been protecting my children from after everyone went to bed?
Then Sophie looked past Grace.
Straight at me.
"Daddy?"
May you like
As I reached for the edge of my false beard, Vanessa's eyes darted toward someone standing behind the guests.
Someone I had trusted with my life.
