Chapter 2: The Second Page

Elena's hand flew to her mouth.
For a moment she just stood there, shaking, staring at me like I was a ghost that had just sat up in its own coffin.
"You're awake," she breathed.
"You've been awake this whole time."
"Every word," I said.
"Every single word."
Her eyes filled.
"Mr.
Vance, they're going to—"
"I know." I gripped her wrist.
"How many of them know about Friday?"
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
"Elena."
"I found something," she whispered.
"In Miss Chloe's coat pocket.
Last Tuesday, when I took it to be pressed." She reached into her uniform and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I didn't know what it meant then."
I opened it with one hand.
It was a transfer authorization.
My signature — except I hadn't signed it.
My accounts.
My offshore holdings.
Every number I had spent twenty years building.
Dated this Friday.
"There's a second page," Elena said quietly.
I turned it over.
A name I hadn't expected.
My lawyer's signature was at the bottom — but above it, countersigning as witness, was my cousin Anthony.
The room felt very cold.
"They were never going to wait for you to d\*e naturally," Elena said.
"Friday was never about the money moving faster."
She looked at the door.
"Friday was the day they stopped needing you alive at all."

What Julian found on that second page was only the beginning.
