Andrew's eyes lit up the moment I agreed.
That smug smile spread across his face like he'd already won.
"I knew you'd come around," he said.
"You're making the right choice."
I kept my smile steady and said, "Before I sign anything or make any calls, I need you to put your request in writing.
Every word.
That you asked me to give up guardianship of my children so your parents wouldn't cut you off."
The smile disappeared.
"Why would I do that?"
"Because that's my condition, Andrew.
You want me to hand over my children — put it in writing and sign it."
He stared at me.
"That's insane.
I'm not signing anything."
"Then there's no wedding," I said quietly.
"Those are my terms."
His voice dropped.
"Alice, don't push me on this."
"I'm not pushing anyone," I said.
"I'm just asking you to stand behind your own words."
He grabbed his phone and stepped away.
I could hear him talking in a low, tight voice — his mother, I was almost certain.
When he came back, something in his expression had shifted.
He wasn't angry anymore.
He looked nervous.
And then he said something that stopped me cold.
