Chapter 2: The Phone in Richard's Hand

Part 2 ⬇️

Susan's face went hard as stone.

"I protected this family," she said.

"That's all I did."

"You told her I was de@d." Nick's voice was quiet.

That was worse than shouting.

"Mom.

You told Hannah I was de@d."

"You were going to make the biggest mistake of your life."

"That wasn't your decision!"

"It was my job to protect you!"

I couldn't move.

I was standing on that patio holding a package with Susan's name on it, and Nick — Nick who I had cried over for two months, Nick whose face I had tried to forget — was standing ten feet away from me, very much alive.

"What did you tell me?" he said, turning back to her.

"After the accident.

What exactly did you tell me?"

Susan pressed her lips together.

Richard stepped forward.

"She told you Hannah never came.

That Hannah didn't call, didn't ask about you, didn't want to know."

Nick went still.

"She told me you moved on," he said slowly.

He looked at me.

"She showed me a message.

From your number.

Saying you were done."

My stomach dropped.

"I never sent that."

Something shifted in his eyes.

Susan reached for his arm.

"Nick—"

He pulled away.

"Where's your phone, Mom."

"This is not the time—"

"Where.

Is.

Your phone."

That's when I noticed what was in Richard's hand.

He was already holding it.
