I walked back out there with my head up.
My hands were shaking, but no one could see that.
I had flowers to arrange.
A ceremony to set up.
And a man who was supposed to be d*ad standing twenty feet away from me.
I kept moving.
When the doors to the ceremony hall opened, I finally saw her — the bride.
Young.
Radiant.
Completely unaware.
She had no idea the man waiting for her at the altar had a fiancée who spent three months crying herself to sleep over his grave.
The ceremony began.
I stood near the back, half-hidden behind a floral arch I'd built with my own hands.
Adrian stood at the altar, smiling.
That smile.
I used to love that smile.
Then the officiant spoke.
"If anyone here has reason to object to this union…
speak now."
The room went quiet.
Colleen turned her head slowly — and found me immediately.
Her face went white.
She knew exactly what I was thinking.
I looked at Adrian.
He hadn't seen me yet.
My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.
I took one step forward.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
*"Meredith.
Please don't.
There are things you don't know yet.
Meet me outside.
— Julian"*
I stopped.
Julian knew too?
