Chapter 1: The Gift I Brought to Their Wedding

My father was cheating on my dying mother with her sister, and after Mom d\*ed, they quickly announced their engagement — but at their wedding, I made sure they would never forget that day.

My mom was diagnosed with cancer, and we fought for her life as hard as we could.

I lived in another city because I was in college, and I was certain that whenever I was away studying, my father was taking care of Mom.

He'd been her husband for 20 years.

How could it be any different?

Apparently, it could.

Usually, Dad and I would coordinate my trips home from college so I could help him take care of Mom.

She was very weak after chemotherapy, and as you can imagine, she needed someone to drive her to the doctor, help around the house, cook meals, and so on.

One day, I came home from college earlier than Dad and I had agreed on and unlocked the front door with my key.

That's when I heard Dad talking to someone.

The voice sounded so familiar.

He was standing in the kitchen talking to Lisa — my mom's younger sister.

At first, I thought she'd come over to help around the house too.

But then I heard her laughing as she said to my father:

"God, honey, I can't wait for us to finally be together.

I want to live with you in this house and finally have our wedding."

I froze behind the wall.

Then Dad laughed and replied:

"Sweetheart, we've already been together for a whole year, and that old woman still has no idea.

Just be patient a little longer.

The house belongs to her, so I need to make sure I get it.

She still has to sign some papers, so for now, I have to keep playing the loving husband."

I slipped out of the house before they could see me.

I swear I could barely feel my legs from the shock.

God, what the hell was going on?

My father was cheating on my dying mother with her own sister, and they were waiting for her to p\*ss so they could live together in her house?

It made me sick.

But I pulled myself together and told myself I would do everything I could to make sure that didn't happen.

I pretended I knew nothing and went to see Mom as often as possible so I could take care of her.

I didn't want to tell her anything.

You should've seen how weak she was.

She wouldn't have been able to handle something like that on top of everything else.

But a month later, she was gone.

About three weeks after the funeral, my father and Lisa announced their engagement.

Dad made it sound as though everything had suddenly happened after Mom d\*ed.

Of course I "believed" that.

But that whole time, I'd been preparing something.

A special wedding gift.

It made me sick to even go to their wedding.

But I wanted to hand them my gift personally and see the looks on their faces.

In front of around 100 guests, I handed the box to Dad and Lisa.

When they opened it, Lisa screamed so loudly that the walls of the restaurant seemed to shake.

My father stood there, red as a tomato.

And I couldn't help but smile.
