Chapter 2: The Good Coat

Part 2 ⬇️

I opened the door and my father was standing there in his good coat, the one he only wore to things that mattered to him.

He was smiling.

"Claire." He stepped forward like he was going to hug me.

"We saw the news.

Eighteen million dollars — sweetheart, that is incredible."

I didn't move.

"You didn't come to the funeral," I said.

"We've been over that.

Melissa's dinner had been booked for—"

"You didn't come to the funeral, Dad."

He stopped.

Then my mother appeared behind him on the porch, and behind her, Melissa, still wearing her engagement ring like a small announcement.

My mother's voice dropped to something soft and careful.

"We're here now, aren't we?

That's what matters.

Family pulls together."

I looked at the three of them standing in my doorway.

Ethan's coffee mug was still beside the sink.

Lily's jacket was still on the hook.

Noah's sneakers were still turned sideways under the bench.

"Which part of the eighteen million are you here for?" I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Melissa said something that made my mother grab her arm — too late.

And I understood, in that moment, that this was never going to be about grief.

What Melissa said next — and what Claire found out about her own family in the days that followed — is worse than anything in Part 1.
