Chapter 1: The Key He Left Behind
MY FATHER'S LAST KEY LED ME TO A MANSION—THEN THE OWNER SAID, "HE LIED ABOUT WHO HE WAS."
My father left me one strange thing before he died.
An old brass key.
He never told me what it opened.
He only gave me an address and said:
"Go there when I'm gone."
The address led me to a mansion I had never seen in my life.
I stepped inside holding the key.
A young woman named Sophie met me near the entrance.
She looked at the key, puzzled.
"Can I help you?"
I held it up.
"My father told me this opened something here."
She asked his name.
"Thomas Cross."
Her expression changed.
Then an older man appeared at the top of the staircase.
He had clearly heard us.
"What name did you say?"
I repeated it.
Thomas Cross.
Then he saw the key.
His face completely changed.
He came toward me.
"Give me that."
I pulled my hand back.
"Why?"
He looked at me and said:
"Because I gave that key to my son."
I stared at him.
That made no sense.
"My father wasn't your son."
The old man asked what Thomas had told me about his family.
I answered honestly.
"He said they all d*ed before I was born."
For a moment, the man couldn't speak.
Then he looked directly at me.
"He lied."
I asked the obvious question.
"About what?"
His answer changed everything I thought I knew about my life.
"About being your father."
I couldn't move.
"Then who was he?"
The man looked at me.
And said:
"Your brother."
The key suddenly wasn't the mystery anymore.
My entire childhood was.
