Chapter 1: The Melody He Never Explained

MY FATHER RAISED ME FOR 30 YEARS—THEN A BURNED MUSIC BOX REVEALED WHO I REALLY WAS
My father passed away last week.
Before he died, he gave me an old silver music box and told me to return it to a historic hotel in Boston.
He never explained why.
The moment the hotel manager saw the burned metal and the family crest engraved underneath, his expression changed.
Then he opened it.
A lullaby started playing.
I knew that melody.
My father had played it for me since I was a child.
Then the hotel owner, Eleanor Hale, heard the music from across the lobby.
She rushed toward us.
"Turn that off."
When she saw the music box, she looked terrified.
She asked who gave it to me.
I told her:
"My father.
Thomas Mercer."
That name changed everything.
Thomas had been a firefighter.
And according to Eleanor, he had been inside this very hotel the night it burned thirty years ago.
Then the manager noticed an engraving inside the music box:
"FOR AVA — LOVE, MOM."
My name is Ava.
I told Eleanor what my father had always told me:
He found me outside this hotel after the fire.
She stared at me.
Then said:
"He didn't find you."
I froze.
She told me Thomas had carried a baby out of the burning hotel.
He was supposed to bring her back.
But Thomas returned alone.
And told the family the baby had d\*ed.
I asked the only question that mattered.
"What was the baby's name?"
Eleanor looked straight at me.
"Ava."
My hands tightened around the music box.
"Are you saying that baby was me?"
She wouldn't say that.
Instead, she said something worse:
"Thomas Mercer was the last person seen carrying my granddaughter."
The man I called Dad had raised me for thirty years.
And this family had spent those same thirty years believing their baby d\*ed in that fire.
So now I have one question:
Why would my father lie?

Did Thomas take Ava to protect her — or to keep her?
