By morning, my attorney, Sandra, was sitting beside my hospital bed with a folder thick enough to make my stomach drop.
"How long?" I asked.
"At least two years," she said quietly.
"Valerie, Brian added his father as a secondary signatory on three of your investment accounts.
Small withdrawals at first.
Then larger ones.
Over two years, they moved just under $340,000."
I couldn't speak.
"He knew the thresholds," Sandra continued.
"He kept every transfer just below the amount that triggers an automatic audit.
Someone helped him structure this.
This wasn't Brian acting alone."
I thought about Charles sitting at the head of my table.
Eating my food.
Living in my home.
Burning me while his son held me still.
"There's something else," Sandra said.
She slid a single page across the blanket.
It was a legal document.
Brian had filed it six weeks ago — quietly, with no notice to me.
I read the title twice before the words fully registered.
A petition to establish financial guardianship over my accounts.
The stated reason: *"spouse demonstrates emotional instability and poor financial judgment."*
My hands went cold.
"He was building a case against me," I whispered.
Sandra nodded.
"And your father-in-law signed the supporting declaration."
My phone buzzed on the nightstand.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
*"Valerie.
There's something you don't know about Brian yet.
Something that happened before you two ever met.
Call me."*
