Chapter 2: The Envelope in the Drawer

The drive home was quiet.

Noah fell asleep in his car seat before we reached the highway.

I kept both hands on the wheel and didn't let myself cry until I pulled into our driveway.

Daniel was already home.

The kitchen light was on.

He took one look at my face and knew.

"What happened?"

I told him everything.

The wineglass.

The SUV.

Vanessa's laugh.

My mother's silence.

And the moment Noah asked if his daddy was poor.

Daniel didn't say a word for a long time.

Then he walked to the kitchen drawer and pulled out a sealed envelope.

"I was going to wait until Thanksgiving," he said.

"But maybe you should see this now."

I looked at the return address.

My hands went cold.

It was from a commercial property group in Columbus.

I recognized the name — everyone in Ohio did.

"Daniel.

What is this?"

He sat down across from me at the table.

"You remember the second shop I told you I was consulting for?

The one in Dublin?"

"Yes."

"I didn't just consult, Emily." He paused.

"I bought it.

And the one in Westerville.

And the building on Fifth."

The envelope held three property deeds.

All in Daniel's name.

My phone buzzed on the counter.

A text from my mother.

It said only: *Your father wants to talk.*
