Chapter 1: The Man My Father Chose Over Me

My father cut me off after I divorced the man he'd always treated like a son — 18 years later, he still hadn't asked for forgiveness, but his final wish made my knees go weak.
I got married at 19.
Luis and I were high school sweethearts, and pretty much the second we graduated, we decided to get married because we were absolutely convinced we'd be together forever.
Yeah, I know.
You're kind of dumb enough to believe that stuff at 19.
But for a while, we were genuinely happy.
My dad especially loved Luis.
Sometimes I joked that he liked him more than me.
I was his only daughter, and Luis basically became the son he'd never had.
They went fishing, took little road trips, watched games together — you know, all that father-son stuff.
Then I found out Luis was cheating on me.
I knew right away I couldn't forgive that.
I couldn't look at him the same anymore, so I filed for divorce.
Dad immediately took Luis's side.
I explained what had happened.
I cried.
I begged him to understand why I couldn't stay married to someone who'd betrayed me.
None of it mattered.
"You've always been selfish," Dad snapped.
"Luis deserves a wife who knows how to forgive instead of throwing away her family the second things get hard."
And that was basically it.
He cut me off.
God, it hurt.
I was already dealing with the end of my marriage, and somehow I lost my father too, simply because I refused to stay with the man who'd cheated on me.
For 18 years, we didn't speak.
No apology ever came, and eventually, I had to accept that maybe it never would.
Then, a few days ago, I got a call I never in a million years expected.
Apparently, Dad had a serious medical condition and wasn't expected to have much time left.
After everything, I still couldn't bring myself to ignore that, so I was about to see him for the first time in 18 years.
He still didn't ask for forgiveness — but when he finally told me his final wish, my knees went weak because it was the last thing I ever expected to hear from him.
