Chapter 2: What Grandmother Left Behind

"What do you mean the deed wasn't in the will?" I asked.

Sylvia's voice dropped.

"Gwyneth transferred the property title eighteen months ago.

Quietly.

To a separate holding structure entirely."

"To whom?"

"To you, Abigail.

Solely to you."

The room went very still.

I had been lying in that hospital bed believing I was fighting to protect Grandma's home from being stolen.

I hadn't known I already owned it.

"Then what were those transfer documents Chloe was trying to force me to sign?"

"A fraudulent conveyance," Sylvia said flatly.

"If you had signed, you would have unknowingly surrendered your own legal title to a shell company your father incorporated four months ago."

My ribs throbbed.

My hands were shaking.

"Does Chloe know I'm already on the title?"

Sylvia paused one beat too long.

"Abigail…

your grandmother's private files were accessed from her home office the night before her funeral.

Someone knew exactly what they were looking for."

A knock at my hospital room door.

Not a nurse.

Not security.

My mother stepped inside, alone, clutching a folded envelope against her chest.

"I need to tell you something," she whispered.

"Before your father finds out I came here."

Her eyes were red.

Her hands wouldn't stop trembling.

"Your grandmother didn't just leave you the house."
