Chapter 2: The Note With No Name

The detectives listened without interrupting.

When I finished, the older one leaned forward.

"Miss Rios, we need to ask you something carefully.

Is there any chance your parents didn't know how serious your injuries were when they left?"

I almost laughed.

"My mother was still recording when I stopped moving."

The room went quiet.

I gave them everything — the bank statements, the transfer records, the notarized letter from my grandfather's original attorney stating that the trust could not be modified without all three beneficiaries signing.

My parents had forged two of those signatures.

Mine.

And my younger brother Marco's.

Marco.

He didn't even know.

On the fifth day, a nurse handed me a folded note.

No name on the outside.

I opened it.

*Stop talking to the police.

We still have Marco.

You know what we're capable of.*

My hands went still.

They weren't just trying to protect the money.

They were using my brother as a threat.

I pressed the call button for the nurse, but my eyes stayed locked on that note.

Because the handwriting wasn't my father's.

It wasn't my mother's either.

Someone else was involved.

Someone I hadn't considered.

Someone who had been inside this hospital.
