Chapter 2: The Man Who Silenced the Room

He walked in at exactly the right moment.

The ballroom doors opened and every head turned.

Tall, composed, dressed in a dark suit that cost more than most people's cars.

He moved through the crowd like he owned the room — because, as I would later learn, he nearly did.

My father's microphone hand dropped to his side.

"Jessi." His voice reached me before he did.

Warm.

Certain.

Like I was the only person in the room worth looking at.

He took my hand, kissed my cheek, and turned to face my father.

"You must be Arthur," he said.

Not a question.

A statement.

Calm as stone.

Arthur Sterling — the man who had held a microphone over my humiliation twenty minutes ago — opened his mouth and closed it again.

Chloe grabbed her new husband's arm.

"Who is that?" she whispered.

No one answered her.

Because at that exact moment, an older woman near the back of the room stood up from her seat.

She had been watching quietly since the fountain.

She set down her champagne glass and walked toward us with the kind of stillness that silences a room.

My father saw her first.

The color left his face.

"That's not possible," he said under his breath.

"She doesn't know about—"

He stopped himself.

But I had already heard it.

What does Arthur know about that woman — and what has he been hiding?
