Chapter 2: The Man Marcus Buried

The room went completely still.
Marcus stared at Chairman Cole like he hadn't heard correctly.
Then he laughed — a short, nervous sound that didn't belong in that silence.
"Harrison, surely you're joking.
She's nobody.
She hasn't worked a day in—"
"Careful, Marcus." The chairman's voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
I stood where the guards had released me, smoothing my dress, saying nothing.
I had waited six months for this moment.
I wasn't going to rush it.
Marcus's girlfriend touched his arm.
He shook her off.
"She has no qualifications.
No role in this company.
You don't even know her."
The chairman looked at him for a long moment.
"I've known Rebecca for eleven years," he said.
"She's the one who saved this company the first time."
A murmur moved through the crowd.
Marcus turned to me, and for the first time all evening, the confidence was gone.
"What does he mean?" he said.
"What did you tell him?"
I hadn't told him anything.
I didn't need to.
Because across the ballroom, a door opened — and the man who walked through it was someone Marcus believed he had destroyed two years ago.
Someone who had kept every document.
Every email.
Every signature Marcus had forged.
Marcus saw his face and went completely still.
