We were somewhere over Lake Michigan when my phone finally connected to the airport Wi-Fi.
Carmen had called four times.
I stepped into the tiny airplane bathroom and called her back.
She picked up on the first ring, and I could hear the noise of the celebration behind her — glasses, laughter, Beatrice's voice carrying over everything.
"Mrs.
Vance." Her voice was barely a whisper.
"The paternity test Arthur showed his mother…
it was f@lsified.
I have the original documents.
The real ones."
My hand gripped the sink.
"Carmen, what are you saying?"
"Mateo is not Arthur's son." A pause.
"But that is not the worst part."
I couldn't breathe.
"The worst part," she said, "is that I found a second test.
One Arthur paid for privately, eight months ago.
He never showed it to anyone."
"A test for who?"
She went quiet for three full seconds.
"For Maya, Mrs.
Vance."
The floor felt like it dropped out from under me.
Before I could speak, I heard Beatrice's voice in the background — sharp and ceremonial — announcing that the ring was about to be placed on Mateo's finger.
Then I heard Carmen's footsteps crossing the kitchen floor.
"I'm going out there now," she said quietly.
"Whatever happens next, your daughters deserve the truth."
The line went silent.
