Chapter 2: The Name No One Was Supposed to Say

Part 2 ⬇️
The bride's name was Serena.
I hadn't known that until Mason said it through clenched teeth as he crossed the room toward us.
"Julian." That was all he said.
Just the name.
Like a warning.
Julian smiled like a man holding four aces.
"Mason.
Congratulations." He extended his hand.
"Beautiful wedding."
Mason didn't take it.
Serena still hadn't moved.
She was standing in the middle of the room, broken glass at her feet, staring at Julian like she'd seen something rise from the gr@ve.
I leaned close to Julian and kept my voice low.
"You two know each other.
How?"
"Not here," he said quietly.
"Julian—"
"Claire." He finally looked at me, and something in his eyes made my stomach drop.
"The woman Mason is marrying today?
She was engaged to my brother.
Three years ago.
She disappeared two weeks before their wedding and took everything he had."
The room felt like it tilted.
"Your brother—"
"Never recovered." His jaw tightened.
"And Mason knew.
He knew exactly who she was when he started seeing her."
I looked at Mason.
He was watching us.
His face had gone from white to something harder.
Calculated.
Then Serena took one step toward Julian and said, very quietly—
"You need to leave.
Right now.
Before you do something you can't take back."
Julian didn't move.
"I'm not here to cause a scene, Serena." He reached into his jacket pocket and placed a small folded envelope on the table beside him.
"I'm just here to make sure the right people get that."
---
What's inside that envelope — and what did Serena do to Julian's brother?
The full truth comes out in ways nobody in that room expected.
