Chapter 2: The Lady From the Photograph

Eleanor's threat still rang in my ears when Daniel spoke again, his voice lower this time.
"Rachel.
Are they mine?"
I couldn't breathe.
Across the room, Betty had picked up her rose basket again and was watching me with those gray eyes—his eyes—waiting.
"Don't answer that." Eleanor's voice cut back onto the line like a blade.
"Don't you dare answer that, Rachel."
But Daniel wasn't talking to her anymore.
"I need you to come to Aspen.
Bring the girls."
I almost laughed.
Three days later, I was standing in the back row of his wedding, watching my daughters walk toward the man who had never known they existed—because his mother had made sure of it.
When Daniel dropped that ring, Eleanor moved fast.
She crossed the aisle in three sharp steps and grabbed Mia by the shoulder.
"These children are not supposed to be here," she said, loud enough for the front rows to hear.
Mia looked up at her, completely still.
Then, in a clear, calm voice that silenced the entire room, she said:
"You're the lady from the photograph."
Eleanor's face went white.
I hadn't shown my daughters any photographs.
I didn't own any.
So whose photograph had Mia seen?
