Chapter 2: The Envelope She Carried In Silence

Eleanor didn't raise her voice.
She didn't need to.
She walked directly up to Greg, stopped two feet in front of him, and looked at him the way only a mother can — like she was seeing every disappointing choice he had ever made, all at once.
"Gregory." Her voice was quiet.
Controlled.
Ice cold.
Greg blinked.
"Mom, this isn't—"
"You will not finish that sentence." She didn't look at the girlfriend.
Not once.
"You dragged an eight-year-old boy away from his own birthday party to perform for your ego.
In front of his friends.
In front of his mother.
In front of me."

Greg's jaw tightened.
"I just want Leo to feel comfortable with—"
"Comfortable?" Eleanor's eyes didn't move from his face.
"Leo looks terrified.
Look at your son, Gregory.
Actually look at him."
Greg glanced down at Leo.
Something flickered across his face.
He opened his mouth.
Then Eleanor reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a folded envelope and held it against her chest without opening it.
"We need to talk," she said quietly.
"About the apartment.
About the custody arrangement.
And about what I found out last Tuesday."
Greg went pale.
---
What's inside that envelope — and what did Eleanor find out last Tuesday?
What Greg did next shocked everyone there.
