I grabbed Mason's hand and pulled him close.
The man in the suit didn't raise his voice.
He didn't have to.
"Ma'am, this is a formal notice.
The property at 14 Clover Lane has been placed under a legal hold.
All active listings must be suspended immediately."
Tiffany's coffee cup slipped from her fingers and shattered on the step.
"That's impossible," she said.
"I have a closing next week.
Do you know how much commission I stand to lose?"
The man didn't blink.
"That's no longer our concern.
Mrs.
Eleanor Bennett has filed a civil complaint, and the county has flagged three additional code violations on properties you listed this quarter."
I looked across at Mrs.
Bennett's porch.
She was sitting in her doorway, watching.
Calm.
Still.
Like she'd been waiting for this exact morning.
Tiffany spun toward her.
"You did this?
You called them over a ramp?
A piece of scrap wood?"
Mrs.
Bennett looked at her for a long moment.
"No, dear.
I called them about the other thing."
The silence that followed felt like a held breath.
One of the suited men opened a second folder and handed it to his colleague.
I caught two words before he closed it.
*Bennett Estate.*
Mason tugged my sleeve.
"Mom…
who is Mrs.
Bennett?"
