Chapter 1: The Dog Tray

My entire family was enjoying dinner when I arrived home.

Everyone except my three-year-old daughter.

She was underneath the dining table.

Dirty.

Hungry.

Eating scraps from a dog tray.

For a moment, I thought I was seeing things.

Then she noticed me.

"Daddy!"

She crawled toward me crying.

I picked her up and demanded an explanation.

My wife rolled her eyes.

"She threw her food, so she lost dinner."

I looked down at the tray.

"That's dog food."

My mother-in-law cut in:

"She needs discipline."

My daughter immediately tightened her arms around my neck.

"No, Daddy.

Grandma puts me under there."

The room went completely silent.

I had been away on business for weeks.

I believed my daughter was safe with the people I trusted most.

Then I checked the home cameras.

The first recording showed her being sent under the table.

The next showed her plate being taken away.

Then another showed something that made me stop the video.

My wife and mother-in-law weren't punishing her because she misbehaved.

They were trying to make her stop talking about something she had accidentally seen.

And the moment my daughter told me what that secret was, I understood why everyone at dinner suddenly looked terrified.
