Chapter 2: The Smile She Wasn't Supposed to Show

The room went completely still.
My mother was the first to speak.
"What is that?" she said, pointing at the card in my hand.
"What does that mean?"
Melissa looked at her, then at me.
Then she did something I didn't expect.
She smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not an apologetic smile.
A slow, deliberate smile — like she had already decided what her next move was going to be.
"You're overreacting," she said.
"It's a support band.
My back has been terrible.
You know that."
"That card says faux maternity form."
"It's a medical product.
The packaging is misleading."
I heard one of the guests quietly set down her glass.
Grace was still standing beside me, her hand in mine now.
She didn't say anything.
She just watched Melissa the way children watch something they don't fully understand but know is wrong.
Then my mother walked to the gift table and picked up a small envelope that had been sitting there since the party started.
She held it out to me.
"This came in the mail last week," she said.
"I didn't open it.
But I think you need to read it now."
Melissa's smile disappeared.
"Don't," she said.
Her voice was different now.
Flat.
Hard.
My mother didn't move.
I took the envelope.

What was inside that envelope — and how long had Melissa been hiding the truth?
