Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Box

Part 2 ⬇️

Inside the box was a printed invoice.

A cleaning bill.

A pool service bill.

And a damage assessment for the kitchen tiles — one of Dylan's friend's kids had cracked two of them dragging a chair across the floor.

The total came to $2,400.

Dylan's face went white.

"You're not serious," she said.

"It was a CHILD'S BIRTHDAY PARTY."

My son didn't raise his voice.

He just slid a second piece of paper across the table.

"That's the security footage timestamp log.

Twenty-three guests.

You told Mom five kids."

Dylan looked at me.

Then back at him.

"She's your MOTHER.

She should want to do this for Lily."

"She did it for Lily," my son said quietly.

"You did it for yourself."

Dylan pushed back her chair and said she wasn't paying a single cent.

That I was being petty.

That I'd always had it out for her.

Then Lily, who had been sitting quietly the whole time, looked up and said something that made the entire table go still.

None of us expected those words to come from a six-year-old.

And Dylan's expression shifted from anger to something that looked a lot like fear.

What did little Lily say that silenced everyone?
