Chapter 2: The Silence That Answered Everything

Part 2 — Continued below 👇

---

Megan folded her hands on the table like she was running a business meeting.

"Yes, Linda.

I do."

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

"Megan, I helped you every single week.

I drove you to appointments.

I built that nursery with my own hands.

And now you're sitting here telling me I have to—"

"That was your choice," she said.

"This is mine."

I looked down at Rule 5 again.

It said I had to sign over my legal right to ever contest any decision Megan made about the child.

Visits, holidays, milestones.

All of it.

Her word, final.

Forever.

No exceptions.

If I refused to sign, I would not be allowed in the delivery room.

I would not be called when the baby arrived.

I would meet my grandchild only when Megan decided I had earned it.

My hands were still shaking when I heard the front door open.

Daniel walked in, still in his work jacket.

He looked at the paper on the table.

Then at me.

Then at Megan.

He didn't look surprised.

"Daniel." My voice broke.

"Did you know about this?"

He set his keys down slowly.

"Mom, just—"

"Did you know?"

He didn't answer.

That silence told me everything.
