Chapter 2: The Signature Emily Never Gave

Marcus tapped a handwritten note beneath Victoria’s reservation instructions.

“She told our staff to present the bill to you after dessert,” he said.

“But there’s something else.”

He turned over a second page.

A $2,000 deposit had been charged to a card bearing Emily’s name.

My hands tightened around the paper.

“Emily never mentioned paying a deposit.”

“That’s because she may not know,” Marcus replied.

“The authorization was submitted by Mrs.

Whitmore.”

I returned to the private room with Marcus beside me.

Victoria lifted her glass and smiled.

“Well, Robert?

Did they find a card that works?”

I placed the record in front of Emily.

“Is this your signature?”

Emily stared at it, then shook her head.

“I’ve never seen this before.”

Daniel suddenly stood and pulled the page toward him.

“Mom, where did you get Emily’s card information?”

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

“Sit down, Daniel.”

“No,” he said.

“Answer me.”

Before she could respond, Marcus stepped forward holding another sealed envelope.

“I’m afraid the deposit isn’t the only thing Mrs.

Whitmore arranged,” he said.

Victoria froze—and for the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.
