Chapter 2: A Warning Dressed as a Husband

**PART 2**
I stared at Hailey's message until the words blurred.
An architect.
A deposit.
A renovation I never agreed to — on a house that was in my name alone.
My hands were steady now.
Skylar had fallen asleep in the booth across from me, her cheek resting on her arm.
I watched her breathe and typed one message back to Hailey.
"What renovation?"
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then:
"Brandon said you approved it weeks ago.
The permits are already filed, Char.
The contractor has a signed copy of your authorization."
I had never signed anything.
I opened my email.
Nothing.
I checked my document folder on my phone.
Nothing.
Then I remembered the photographs.
The ones I had found on Brandon's laptop three months ago — photos of my personal files, my house deed, my signature page from our mortgage refinance.
Someone had copied my signature.
My phone lit up.
Brandon, calling for the thirty-first time.
I answered.
"Charlotte, what are you doing?" His voice was controlled, but I could hear something underneath it.
Not anger.
Fear.
"I'm having dinner with our daughter.
The one who was eating instant soup while your mother drank imported wine."
Silence.
Then, very quietly: "You need to come home.
There are people involved in this that you don't know about.
If you push this tonight, it won't just be our marriage that falls apart."
I felt the air leave my lungs.
That wasn't a husband trying to explain himself.
That was a warning.
