Chapter 1: The Photo That Changed Everything

My daughter went away to scout camp for a week, and I was so relieved when she sent me a photo — but after I looked at it more closely, I frantically called the camp.

My daughter is twelve, a straight-A student, and the kind of kid who's never given me a reason to worry.

She'd never been suspended, never gotten into a fight, and never been the one calling home because she'd gotten herself into trouble.

So when she begged me to let her spend a week at scout camp with the other kids from her troop, I finally agreed.

It was her first time away from home for more than one night.

The first two days, I barely heard from her.

I knew phones were discouraged during activities, so I tried not to keep checking in.

Then, on the third day, my phone buzzed.

She'd sent me a photo.

She was smiling at the camera with the ordinary bustle of camp behind her.

Underneath, she'd written:

"We just finished training and we're heading to lunch.

See?

Everything's fine.

It's so much fun here!

Love you and miss you!"

I smiled.

Then I looked at the photo again.

Something caught my eye.

I stared at it for several seconds.

Then I zoomed in.

My smile vanished.

I zoomed in again.

There was something in that picture that made absolutely no sense.

I called my daughter immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

My hands were trembling when I called the camp office and asked to speak to the counselor in charge of her group.

When she came on the line, I explained what had happened and sent her the photo.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

"Please," I whispered.

"Tell me I'm imagining this."

There was another long pause.

Then her voice changed.

"Ma'am…

are you sure your daughter sent you this photo today?"

What did she see in that photo?

And why did the counselor go silent?
