Chapter 1: The Invitation That Never Came

My daughter was the only kid not invited to her best friend's sweet 16—when I called to ask why, she whispered, "You'd better ask your husband."

My daughter Emma and Sophie had been best friends since kindergarten.

For eleven years, they were almost inseparable.

They had sleepovers every other weekend, spent summers at each other's houses, wore matching Halloween costumes as kids, and already planned to attend the same college.

So when Sophie started planning her Sweet 16, Emma was involved in everything.

They spent weeks choosing decorations and making a playlist.

Emma helped Sophie pick her red birthday dress, and Sophie chose the pale-pink one Emma would wear.

"You'll stand right beside me in every picture," Sophie told her.

Emma even spent three months making her gift—a scrapbook with one photograph from every year of their friendship.

Then the invitations went out.

Emma didn't get one.

At first, she laughed.

"Sophie probably forgot to give me mine."

But by Friday, nearly everyone in their grade had been invited.

Even girls Sophie barely spoke to were invited.

One boy she'd argued with all semester had an invitation.

Emma didn't.

She texted Sophie.

No answer.

She called.

Straight to voicemail.

At school, Sophie actually turned and walked away the moment she saw her.

That night, I found Emma sitting on her bedroom floor beside the pink dress they'd chosen together.

Then she started crying.

"I just want to know what I did wrong.

Why is she being so cruel to me?"

My husband, Mark, seemed as confused as I was.

He held Emma close and called Sophie's behavior unacceptable.

But something didn't make sense.

These girls had loved each other for eleven years.

You don't erase your best friend overnight for no reason.

So I called Sophie myself.

"I'm not asking you to invite Emma," I said.

"But please tell me what happened."

Silence.

Then Sophie spoke.

"Mrs.

Parker...

you'd better ask your husband."

I froze.

"What did my husband do?"

Sophie went quiet.

Then she whispered,

"Ask him.

But I doubt he'll tell you the truth."

I swallowed.

"What truth?"

There was a long pause.

"Mrs.

Parker...

I can't even look at Emma after what he did."

My stomach dropped.

"Sophie, what are you talking about?"

"Okay.

I'll tell you.

But you'd better sit down."

Her voice dropped.

"It's about what your husband did to me...

May you like

and my mom."

Her next words made me sick.
