Chapter 2: What the Video Could Not Hide

The video was only forty seconds long.

But it changed everything I thought I knew about my daughter.

It was filmed in the school hallway.

Claire didn't know anyone was recording.

A boy — smaller than the others, backed against a locker — was surrounded by a group of kids.

They were laughing.

Pushing.

One of them knocked his lunch tray to the floor.

Then Claire walked into the frame.

She stepped between them without hesitating.

She stood in front of that boy and didn't move.

"Leave him alone," she said.

Her voice was steady.

"Every single day.

Leave.

Him.

Alone."

The group went quiet.

Then one of them shoved her.

She didn't step back.

The video cut off there.

I looked up at Rocky.

He was wiping his face with his sleeve.

"That boy was me," he said.

"She did that for me every day for two months.

We never thanked her.

We mocked her instead."

My throat closed.

"Then she got sick," he said.

"And we all knew why we were really here."

I turned back toward Claire's room.

Through the small window in the door, I could see her laughing with her classmates, completely unaware.

Then Rocky said one more thing — quietly, almost to himself.

"There's something else on that video.

Something after the cut.

Mrs.

Evans asked us not to show anyone.

But you need to see it."

What was hidden after that cut — and why did Mrs.

Evans want it buried?
