Chapter 2: What She Left Behind

Inside the box was a letter.
And a photograph.
And something else — something I never expected Hannah to have kept.
The letter was dated two days before she went into labor.
Her handwriting was careful, like she'd taken her time.
Like she'd known.
*"My darling Audrey.
If you're reading this, it means I didn't make it.
Please don't be sad for too long.
You were the best thing I ever did."*
I couldn't breathe.
I kept reading.
Hannah wrote about the little things — her favorite songs, the smell of rain, how she liked her coffee.
Things she wanted Audrey to know about her.
Things a mother tells a daughter over years that Hannah would never get to say.
Then I reached the last paragraph.
And I stopped.
Because Hannah had written a name I hadn't heard in fifteen years.
A name she had promised me meant nothing.
*"There's something I never told you, Audrey.
Something I should have told your grandmother a long time ago.
His name is—"*
I heard the front door open.
"Grandma?
I'm home."
Audrey's voice.
Light.
Happy.
Completely unaware.
I looked down at the letter in my shaking hands, then back at the door.
She couldn't see this.
Not yet.
Not until I understood what Hannah had been hiding — and why.
---
What secret had Hannah been keeping all these years — and what does it mean for Audrey now?
