Chapter 2: The Second Page

Part 2 ⬇️
My hands weren't steady as I unfolded it.
It was a document amendment.
A change to my father's estate — signed three weeks before he passed.
My mother's name had been added as sole beneficiary.
Mine had been removed entirely.
I turned around slowly.
"When did you do this?"
She didn't flinch.
"Your father wanted it that way."
"He was in the hospital.
He could barely hold a pen."
"He was still of sound mind," she said.
"The attorney confirmed it."
Mia pressed her face into my side.
I could feel her shaking.
"She was on the phone," Mia whispered.
"Before you came.
She said — she said if I told you, no one would believe me anyway."
My mother's expression didn't change.
That was the part that hit hardest.
Not the document.
Not the signature.
The fact that she had looked at a seven-year-old and said those words without blinking.
I set the paper down on the desk.
"I want you to leave."
"This is also my son's house —"
"Leave.
Now."
She picked up her handbag slowly, like she had all the time in the world.
At the door she paused.
"You'll regret making an enemy of me."
Then she was gone.
But the document was still on the desk.
And I hadn't reached the second page yet.
