Chapter 1: The Box That Changed Everything

My daughter invited 50 guests to her gender reveal — then the box opened and black balloons floated into the sky.

My daughter, Emily, had planned her gender reveal for months.

Fifty guests filled our backyard.

Pink and blue decorations covered everything, and a huge white box stood in the center of the lawn.

Only the bakery and the party planner knew the baby's gender.

"Ready?" Emily's husband, Jake, asked.

She squeezed his hand.

"Three...

two...

one!"

They pulled the ribbon.

The box opened.

But instead of pink or blue...

dozens of black balloons drifted into the sky.

The entire yard went silent.

Emily's smile vanished.

Jake stared upward.

"What the hell is this?"

The party planner went pale.

"I...

I didn't order black balloons."

My daughter started crying.

Someone muttered that it was a sick joke.

Then I noticed something strange.

One black balloon hadn't floated away.

It was tied to the bottom of the box with a thin silver string.

And attached to it was a small plastic hospital bracelet.

Emily picked it up.

The second she read it, her hands began shaking.

"Mom..."

"What?"

"This has MY name on it."

I grabbed the bracelet.

Emily's full name.

Her date of birth.

But beside it was another date.

Tomorrow.

Jake immediately pulled out his phone and called the police.

Within minutes, two officers arrived.

The party planner showed them the original order.

Pink balloons.

Not black.

Then one officer asked to see our doorbell camera.

We pulled up the footage.

At 4:17 that morning, a hooded figure stepped into our backyard.

Then, before leaving, he looked directly into the camera.

The officer suddenly paused the video.

"Zoom in."

What did that hospital bracelet mean — and does Jake know more than he's saying?
