I opened the fifth file.
The amount attached to it was $340,000.
My hands were steady.
My chest was not.
All five companies had been registered within an eighteen-month window.
All five used variations of my old authorization.
And all five listed a second officer alongside my name.
Not Madison.
Someone else.
A name I recognized immediately.
My brother-in-law.
Richard.
Andrew's uncle.
I sat very still.
Richard had been at every family gathering for twenty years.
He had shaken my hand at Andrew's wedding.
He had hugged me at my husband's funeral and said, "You're not alone, Elaine."
I opened his name in the filing record.
Listed as co-administrator on four of the five companies.
Primary administrator on the largest one.
I picked up my phone and called Andrew again.
He answered faster this time.
"Mom, Madison is very upset—"
"Does Richard know Madison?"
Silence.
A different kind of silence than before.
"Why are you asking about Richard?"
"Answer the question, Andrew."
He didn't.
And that told me everything.
