Chapter 2: The Woman by the Grill

Before I could take another step toward the door, Emily came running across the patio.

"Grandma, where are you going?

You promised you'd swim with me!"

I tried to smile.

"I think I'll just watch today, sweetheart."

Emily looked at me, then looked at Claire.

Eight years old and somehow she already understood exactly what had just happened.

"Grandma looks beautiful," she said loudly.

"I want her in the pool."

Claire laughed — that thin, polished laugh she uses when she's embarrassed but won't admit it.

"Emily, honey, grown-ups get to decide—"

"I think Patricia should stay."

That voice came from behind us.

We both turned around.

Daniel's mother wasn't the only older woman at that barbecue.

Standing near the grill, holding a glass of lemonade, was Claire's own mother, Sandra — who had arrived while we were still inside.

Sandra was 71.

She was wearing a bright floral swimsuit.

And she had heard every single word.

The color drained from Claire's face.

Sandra set her glass down slowly and walked toward us.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't have to.

"Claire," she said.

"I'd like to have a word with you.

Right now."

Claire opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

What Sandra said next — and what Claire finally admitted in front of everyone — is something I will never forget.
