Chapter 2: The Silence After the Number

The table went completely quiet.
I could hear the faint clink of silverware being set down.
Someone coughed.
Then nothing.
"I built a company forty-two years ago," I said.
"One truck.
One borrowed chair.
No one believed I would last six months."
Tessa laughed softly.
Still not worried.
"Tonight, I accepted a final offer to sell that company." I paused.
"One hundred sixty-five million dollars."
The silence that followed was a different kind of silence.
"Reid." My voice stayed even.
"The promotion you celebrated tonight — the salary, the title, the office — I made three calls to people in that company over the past two years.
Quiet calls.
The kind a mother makes when she believes in her son more than he believes in himself."
I heard his breath catch.
"Mom—"
"I also want Tessa to know something." I kept my voice calm.
"The reservation tonight was under my name.
The private room, the wine, the flowers — I arranged all of it.
Because I wanted my son to feel proud."
A chair scraped against the floor somewhere in the room.
Then Tessa's voice came through the speaker — and for the first time all evening, it was very small.
"You paid for all of this?"
"I did," I said.
"And I have one more thing to tell you.
Something that changes everything you think you know about this family."
---
What Wilma said next left Tessa unable to speak — and Reid finally understood what he had allowed to happen.
