Chapter 2: What the Sorting Found

Everyone froze at the bottom of the stairs.

The laundry bags were open.

Every item had been sorted into neat, separate piles — Vanessa's clothes, my son Daniel's clothes, the kids' clothes.

And one pile set apart from the rest.

The men's shirts.

The expensive trousers.

The dry-cleaned button-downs.

Vanessa's face went white.

"What is this?" Daniel asked, looking at the pile.

Then he looked at his wife.

Vanessa grabbed for the shirts.

"Those are nothing.

They're from work — a colleague asked me to—"

"A colleague." Daniel picked up one of the shirts.

He read the dry-cleaner's tag slowly.

Then he set it back down.

The silence was worse than anything I could have said.

My grandchildren stood in the doorway, confused.

I moved them gently back upstairs.

When I came back down, Daniel was still standing there.

Vanessa was talking fast, her voice getting higher with every sentence.

"You planned this," she said, turning to me.

"You did this on purpose."

I looked at her calmly.

"I sorted the laundry," I said.

"That's all."

Daniel said nothing.

He just stared at those shirts like he was trying to remember something.

Or trying to forget it.

That night, he didn't leave with Vanessa.

He stayed.
